Youth Basketball Play 8 - "Swing"

Youth Basketball Play 8 is called "Swing". This is a great offensive play based on the principles of the motion offense!

All five players are constantly cutting and moving, setting and using screens, and looking for open teammates and scoring opportunities.

This is another offense that I like because it utilizes all five players. With this constant movement or "motion", everyone stays involved in the game and the opponents are forced to work harder on defense.

Youth Basketball Play 8 can be used at any level of competition. This play can be modified to fit your players’ skill level and experience. As your players get comfortable with the basic movements, backdoor cuts can be added.

As always, you must first teach your players the fundamentals of basketball before you can implement an offense. Once your players can perform the offensive fundamentals properly, you can then incorporate those into your offensive strategy.

Check out our drills page for some great ideas on teaching your players the fundamentals of the game.

youth basketball plays
  • Players will start in a 4 out - 1 in formation.

  • Four players will be spread around the perimeter, and one will be in the low-post position.

  • 1 will pass to 3 to start the offense. 3 must first make a good v-cut to get open.

youth basketball plays
  • As 1 is passing to 3, 5 will come up the lane and set a back screen on 1's defender.

  • 1 must make a good cut to set up their defender and then run them directly into 5's screen.

  • 1 should be ready for a return pass from 3 and scoring opportunity.

  • If 1 doesn't get an immediate return pass, they should get good low post position and look for a pass from 3.

youth basketball plays
  • 5 should look for a pass from 3 at the ball-side elbow.

  • If 5 doesn't get the pass, they should pop out to 1's original position.

  • As this is happening, 4 should cut into the lane and look for a pass from 3 and scoring opportunity.

  • 2 will then come up to fill 4's position and 4 will fill 2's position.

youth basketball plays
  • When 3 has the basketball in the wing position, they have three passing/scoring options.

  • 3 can pass to 1 in the low post.

  • 3 can pass to 5 at the elbow.

  • 3 can pass to 4 cutting toward the basket.

youth basketball plays
  • If none of these passes are open, 3 will pass the ball out to 5 who will then pass over to 2. This is the "swing" part of the play.

youth basketball plays
  • As this is happening, 1 will come up and set a back screen for 3.

  • 3 must set up their defender with a good fake and cut, and then run them directly into 1's screen.

  • 3 will cut across the lane looking for a pass from 2.

  • If 3 doesn't get an immediate pass, they will get position in the ball side low-post and look for a pass from 2.

youth basketball plays
  • At this point, 2 has three passing/scoring options.

  • 2 can pass to 3 as they come off of 1's screen.

  • 2 can pass to 3 in the low-post.

  • 2 can pass to 1 as they open up to the ball after setting the screen.

youth basketball plays
  • If 2 does not pass the ball to 1 or 3, they will pass out to 4 in the wing.

  • You are now back to the original 4 out - 1 in starting formation.

  • You can now run the play from the opposite side of the court.

Youth Basketball Play 8 is a very simple offensive play - yet it can be so effective when executed properly.

The key to this offense, as well as any other offense, is being fundamentally sound. By drilling your players on the fundamentals first, you are setting them up for success.
