Youth Basketball Play 7 - "5 Out"

Youth Basketball Play 7 is called "5 Out". This offensive play is very simple to teach your players, yet can be very effective at creating easy scoring opportunities.

This is another great play that involves all five players in the offensive game plan. The players will be constantly moving, screening, cutting and looking for open teammates and scoring opportunities.

Make sure your players are fundamentally sound in setting and using screens, as this plays a big part in the offense.

Youth basketball play 7 can be used at any level of competition. This play can be modified to fit your players’ skill level and experience. As your players get comfortable with the basic movements, backdoor cuts can be added.

As always, you must first teach your players the fundamentals of basketball before you can implement an offense. Once your players can perform the offensive fundamentals properly, you can then incorporate those into your offensive strategy.

Check out our drills page for some great ideas on teaching your players the fundamentals of the game.

  • Players will start in an open formation spread out around the 3-point line.

  • 1 will pass to 3 in the wing and then make a front cut to the basket. 1 should be ready for a return pass and scoring opportunity.

  • 3 must first v-cut to get open and then receive the pass from 1. 3 will then look to pass to 1 on their cut to the basket.

youth basketball plays
  • As 1 cuts to the basket, 2 will cut directly to the foul line area looking for a pass from 3.

  • If 2 receives the pass from 3, they should look for a jump shot or a drive to the basket.

  • If 2 does not receive the pass from 3, they will fill the point position.

  • If 1 did not receive a return pass from 3, they will continue through the lane and set a screen on 4's defender.

  • As this is happening, 4 should set up their defender with a good cut and then run them directly into 1's screen.

youth basketball plays
  • 1 will set a screen on 4's defender.

  • 4 will cut off 1's screen into the lane and look for a pass from 3 and scoring opportunity.

  • If 4 does not receive the pass from 3 on the cut, they should get good ball-side post position and look for a pass from 3.

  • After setting the screen on 4's defender, 1 will pop out to the wing position.

youth basketball plays
  • If 4 is not open in the post, 3 will pass out to 2 who will then pass over to 1 in the wing. Players must remember to use good v-cuts to get open for the pass.

  • As the ball is reversed to 1, 4 will step out and set a screen on 5's defender. 5 must set up their defender with a good cut and then run them directly into 4's screen.

  • 5 will cut off of 4's screen into the lane and look for a pass from 1 and scoring opportunity.

  • 1 should look to pass the ball to 5 in the lane.

youth basketball plays
  • If the pass from 1 to 5 is not open, 5 will cut out to the corner.

  • You will now be back in the original open formation.

  • 1 has the ball, 2 will make a front cut to the basket and you will run through the play again.

Youth Basketball Play 7 is a very simple offensive play - yet it can be so effective when executed properly.

The key to this offense, as well as any other offense, is being fundamentally sound. By drilling your players on the fundamentals first, you are setting them up for success.
