Dr. J (Julius Erving)

Picture of Dr. J, Mentoring His Fellow Players

This Dr. J dunk is my favorite basketball picture of all time.

Dr. J. (aka Julius Erving) is the creator of the DUNK. No one can tell me he shouldn’t get the credit for inventing the dunk, at least the dazzling, remarkable, dunks of pure beauty.

Before he joined the NBA, dunks were really tall guys with no excitement at all. Dr. J introduced the art of dunking to the world.

He had many incredible dunks but this one just amazes me how he makes the defender look. It wasn’t his most dazzling but it was a combo of beauty and power and the black and white picture tops it off.

Being a huge NBA fan, this picture is my all time favorite.

Incredible Black & White Photo
by: Joe Waters - webmaster

Hey Wayne...great picture. I love the black and white look and your caption of "Dr. J, Mentoring His Fellow Players" That's hilarious.

And yes, I agree with you, Dr. J helped re-invent the game of basketball - more specifically the dunk.

He added some flare to the game and some much needed excitement. He was definitely ahead of his time.

His greatness can be summed up by the fact that many of the dunks being done today (and even Michael Jordan's dunks) are in some way related to a Dr. J dunk.

He's the "Godfather of the Dunk" in my opinion!
