These Basketball Fundamental Movement Tips are designed to help players, parents and coaches develop the solid foundation needed to enjoy and succeed at the game of basketball.

These tips focus on the main fundamental movements used in basketball: Basic Stance, Starting and Stopping, and Jumping. These fundamentals are needed for every aspect of basketball - shooting, passing, dribbling, defense, etc...

1. Basketball Fundamental Movement Tips - Basic Stance

  • The feet should be staggered and about shoulder-width apart.

  • Body weight should be evenly distributed from front to back and side to side.

  • The head should be centered from front to back and side to side.

  • The arms and legs should be flexed and ready to move.

  • Players should keep their head up.

  • Players should stay low in their stance and be ready to move.


2. Basketball Fundamental Movement Tips - Starting

  • Players should start in a basic stance.

  • Players should be ready to move.

  • The feet should stay on the floor when starting to move.

  • The weight should shift in the direction of the movement.

  • The head should move first in the direction of the movement.

  • Players should stay low and move quickly when starting a move.

  • Starts should be made in a straight line.


3. Basketball Fundamental Movement Tips - Pivoting

  • Players should start in a basic stance.

  • Players should be ready to move.

  • The feet should be wide apart.

  • The head should be level.

  • Players should be in good balance and keep their head up.

  • Pivoting should be done quickly and with a specific purpose.


4. Basketball Fundamental Movement Tips - Stopping

  • When using the quick stop, players should jump from one foot and land on two feet.

  • Players should land in a basic position and be ready.

  • Players should stay close to the floor.

  • The quick stop is used to get into the basic position needed to dribble, pass and shoot.

  • When using the stride stop, players should stay low.

  • Players should land on their back foot first, and then on their front foot.

  • The stride stop is used to change directions when running.


5. Basketball Fundamental Movement Tips - Jumping

  • Players should be in a basic position and be ready to jump.

  • Players should jump under control and then land in a basic position.

  • Players should jump off of one foot when they want to jump quicker and higher - when shooting lay-ups for example.

  • Players should jump off of two feet when they want to jump with more power and control - when rebounding for example.

  • Players should use quick stops and quick jumps when shooting jump shots.
