200+ Basketball Definitions
And Terms

Have you ever noticed the number of Basketball Definitions and Terms that are used during the course of a game, practice, scrimmage or meeting.

When coaches talk to their players, they use "basketball talk". The coach expects their players to understand them at all times. To do this, players need to learn and understand the various basketball terms that are being used.

By having a thorough understanding of these basketball definitions and terms, players show the coach that they have a great understanding of the game.

This is one of those small things that impress a coach. It also makes the coach's job of communicating with the players a bit easier.

I'll give you an example. Which one of these do you think the coach prefers to say and the players prefer to hear:

  • "Let's all gather around the free throw lane."

    OR

  • "Let's all gather around the 12 foot wide area bounded by the free throw lines, also called the paint."

Obviously this is a simple example but it shows how the communication is much smoother when players understand the basketball definitions and terms. Coaches and players are on the same page and are able to understand each other during practices, games, scrimmages and meetings.

Do you need to know every single basketball definition and term? Well - yes, but you don't need to learn them all at once.

You will learn a lot by just being around your coach and other players - and just by being involved in the game. Over time, you will have a great understanding of all the terms of basketball. This will definitely make you a very well-rounded basketball player.
