Here is a great tip for basketball parents.

Remember when the game is on the line and your child is at the foul line with a chance to win the game, he/she at that moment is scared to death.

They need to know that if they miss that shot you are still on their side. Your child should never feel like a disappointment or failure. You should encourage them and tell them everyday that you support them and believe in them - no matter what.

This is one of the most important tips I can share with basketball parents.

Undoing negative self esteem
by: Pam H.

How do you give your son and several of his teammates back their self-esteem and confidence when a new coach tells them they are not worthy of being on a team made up of 25 high school athletes? This happened at our school and we parents have talked to the coach and athletic director. We don't want favoritism. We just want respect for out sons and fairness. He has absolutely crushed them with his negative words.

These are 15 and 16 year old boys that were starters on the same junior varsity team one year ago. My son even played on varsity as a freshman. Now they are told they are not good ball handlers and too short. They range in height from 5'4" to 5'9". How do we encourage them not to be quitters when they are continually being given negative reinforcement?

In a small school and community it is very hard to save face and keep your head held high. We parents are giving all the love and encouragement we can but, to these boys all they hear is the coach's negative remarks. Please, as a mom I am begging for some advice not only for my son but, for his friends who are also his teammates. Please keep them in your prayers. Thank you.

Valuable Tip For Basketball Parents!
by: Joe Waters - webmaster

Great tip Diana! I think basketball parents should NEVER forget this one.

You hit the nail on the head when you said that the child needs to know that the parent is always on their side. Win or lose, make or miss, good or bad...it's only a game. The game of basketball should never be bigger or more important than the parent-child relationship.

I've always believed that the basketball parents that can keep this in perspective are the ones that end up helping their child become that much more successful - not only in basketball, but also in their lives.

Thanks Diana for sharing for such a valuable and important tip for basketball parents!
